Oh, the Places We Go: Delivering Water Storage Where Roads Don’t Reach

When people think about infrastructure projects, they often imagine trucks, cranes, and easy site access. But some of the most important builds happen far beyond sealed roads — in places where planning, adaptability, and precision matter just as much as the product itself.

Deep within Tasmania’s iconic Overland Track, a new hut was being constructed to support hikers and caretakers in one of Australia’s most remote and protected landscapes. The Overland Track is a world-renowned wilderness walking route that runs through Tasmania’s World Heritage–listed national park, with limited access and strict environmental controls. Reliable water storage was essential; but accessing the site by conventional means simply wasn’t possible.

This was not a standard delivery.

With no road access and strict environmental considerations, the solution required a different approach. Working closely with Tasmanian Helicopters, the Orion Tanks team coordinated the safe airlift of two 30,000-litre Aquaplate® Steel tanks, delivering them directly to the site by helicopter.

Every aspect of the lift required careful planning, from load calculations and flight coordination to ensuring the tanks arrived safely and precisely in position. In remote environments like this, there’s no room for error. The success of the delivery was the result of strong collaboration, experience, and an understanding that infrastructure solutions must adapt to their surroundings.

For Orion Tanks, this project highlights an important truth: engineering doesn’t stop where the road ends. Whether supporting remote huts, regional communities, or critical infrastructure, the goal remains the same; providing durable, reliable water storage solutions that perform long after installation.

Aquaplate® steel tanks are designed for longevity and resilience, making them well suited to challenging environments where maintenance access may be limited. In locations like the Overland Track, reliability isn’t just a convenience — it’s essential.

This helicopter delivery is a reminder that some of the most meaningful projects aren’t always the largest or most visible. Sometimes, they’re about quietly supporting the systems that allow people to safely explore, work, and care for extraordinary places.

From urban installations to wilderness projects, Orion Tanks continues to deliver solutions wherever they’re needed; even when the journey there is anything but ordinary.
