When deciding on your next rainwater tank purchase, it is important to understand the product and the materials before making that final decision. Choosing the incorrect material can impact the longevity and warranty of your water-saving investment.
This article will examine a little bit about the steel rainwater tanks construction and provide tips on handling them with care.
Steel tanks are made of corrugated sheets, rolled into a circle, and joined up at the seam. At the base of the corrugated steel, it is rolled out flat along the edge where it will meet the base sheet. The sheet is then turned up nice and tight against the corrugated edge, flattened and riveted in place.
Once all sides are made, we put a generous silicone seal around the joins and silicone the riveting points inside the tank. Upon finishing the tank off with its top and fittings it is then water tested by us right here in our Deloraine factory – we are then 100% assured that every tank that leaves the factory is watertight and fit for purpose.
We have a well-trained delivery team that carefully and professionally deliver our tanks and get them to where they must go without damaging them. However, once they are delivered its crucial, they are well handled by their new owners and have a well-constructed tank base to sit on to avoid any possible damage.
Our tanks are built to last; we need to handle them with care. Most often if your tank is going to give you any problems it will be along the bottom edge. From simply not putting enough preparation into a base or using the wrong materials can cause a tank to leak. We tested this when we recorded our latest videos..... as a comparison, we used a hammer to create a bit of a ding giving a similar appearance as would the tank being moved over a rocky area. Once the steel had an imperfection, the pressure made the silicon lift, which changed the shape of the steel causing it to fail. Whilst we do rivet the edges the base can still be damaged.
The best preparation is when you can prepare a base before your tank arrives, if you need a hand with measurements or best materials to use in construction, we are only too happy to help at Orion Australia. Investing in a steel rainwater tank is a wise decision for sustainable water management. Understanding the construction process and importance of proper handling and base preparation ensures your tank will last for years to come. By following these guidelines and taking advantage of the resources available, such as our Learning Centre, you can maximise the efficiency and longevity of your rainwater tank.
