Water Conservation Series – Tips to Prevent Water Evaporation

In the world of water conservation, preventing evaporation is a vital measure that everyone can contribute to preserve this precious resource. Around the globe, innovative ideas and simple, well-thought measures are helping curb water evaporation. In this series, we will explore both high-tech solutions and easy-to-implement strategies to help reduce water loss due to evaporation.

Simple Yet Effective Methods

Reduce Exposed Water Surface: Planting trees near, but not directly adjacent to, water sources like dams can act as windbreaks and provide shade, reducing evaporation. Consider planting aquatic plants to cover some of the surface area of ponds, this not only creates shade but helps absorb some of the suns energy.

Appropriate Design and Placement: Design and situate ponds, dams, and water collection points to suit the local climate and landscape to naturally reduce evaporation.

Optimal Water Tank Placement: Position water tanks in shaded areas or against walls that do not receive all-day sunlight to minimise evaporation.

Water Tank Colour: Lighter-coloured tanks reflect lighter, and heat compared to darker ones, helping to keep the water cooler, and reducing evaporation.

Pool and Spa Covers: Using covers on pools and spas can reduce water evaporation by up to 95% while also keeping them free from debris.

Innovative Technologies

Control Covers: These eliminate evaporation by preventing dry ambient air and wind from contacting the water in ponds, reservoirs, or tanks. They also help control algae and keep debris out while allowing water collection.

Segmented Floating Systems: Hexagonal discs laid on the water surface reduce evaporation.

Chemical monolayers: These create a soluble film of packed fatty alcohol molecules that act as a physical barrier to water molecules escaping the surface. They are typically used in lakes and reservoirs and can be applied as needed.

Suspended Shade Structures: These can reduce water evaporation by up to 90% by blocking some sunlight from hitting the surface designed for.

Plastic Mulch Covers or Shade Frames: Common in agriculture, these keep soil around plant roots moist and make crops easier to manage. Shade frames can remain in place during cultivation.

Shadow/Black Plastic Balls: These reduce water evaporation and, due to their carbon black colour, decreasing UV and prevent the formation of bromate, a carcinogen.

Practical Applications

Whether you are setting up a new water collection system, managing an existing water supply or aiming to reduce soil moisture evaporation, numerous options are available. Implementing simple measures such as providing shade and shelter can make a significant difference.
