Whether you choose bottled water for convenience or perceived safety, or you are curious about the benefits of a rainwater tank, this guide will help you make a more informed decision.

Bottled Water

The Bottle: Before water even reaches a bottle, a complex production process takes place. Bottles are typically made from PET (polyethylene terephthalate), which, like most plastics is derived from crude oil and natural gas. Manufacturing a single-use bottle can consume between 2-5 litres of water. The production process involves heating plastic pellets until they melt, then pouring them into moulds to form bottles as they cool and solidify.

Water Sources: In Australia, a large percentage of bottled water is sourced from springs. Globally, bottled water can come from various sources, including boreholes, wells, or even filtered tap water, depending on the region.

Tank Water

The Tank: Rainwater tanks have a similar starting point in the production process but use a durable material called polyethylene, a high-quality plastic with different polymers that is safer for long-term use. At Orion Australia, the raw polyethylene is placed into the rotational moulds and is heated externally, producing a smooth and even finish, once cooled you are left with a one-piece tank construction.

Durability and Safety: Polyethylene is a safer, long-lasting alternative to PET plastic, with no known health risks. Though recyclable, many tanks need to be cut into smaller pieces for processing. Alternatively, they can be repurposed creatively, such as for animal shelters or storage solutions.

Convenience vs. Cost

Bottled Water

  • Convenient, allowing you to track your intake easily.
  • Handy for emergencies and easy to store.
  • However, in 2021 almost 600 billion PET bottles were produced worldwide, with most ending up in landfill or polluting the natural environment.
  • The water usage in the production process is significant– each bottle requires several litres of water, which quickly adds up.

Tank Water

  • Allows control over the water source and quality, with no added ingredients.
  • Convenient for filling reusable bottles, though filtering is recommended.
  • Requires periodic maintenance, like cleaning gutters twice a year. A first-flush diverter can help reduce the need for frequent tank cleaning.

Taste

Taste is a personal preference, and the experience varies from person to person.
