Water Conservation Series – Ensuring our Pets Stay Hydrated During the Warmer Months

As the weather warms up, we either look forward to the change or prepare for the challenges it brings. When temperatures rise, it's crucial to ensure our pets’ well-being by keeping them sheltered and hydrated. Just like humans, animals need relief from heat, whether due to their general nature, thick coats, or lack of insulation.

In this article, we will explore some simple steps to help ensure our pets are well cared for and experience minimal heat stress despite the rising temperatures we may face.

All pets are different but here are some simple ideas that could be a lifesaver:

  • Frozen Water Bottles – Animals great and small appreciate these, stock up on used water and juice bottles and fill with water and freeze for summer, you may need to replace twice daily.
  • Shelter – Ensure pets have access to cooler areas of the home during the hottest part of the day.
  • Icy Treats or Fruit – Offer safe and in moderation, frozen treats like low-salt chicken broth for dogs or plain iced water cubes. Ice blocks can be placed in pets water bowls.
  • Placement of Water Bowls – Place water bowls in shaded areas, have multiple bowls, and replace water daily in clean bowls to prevent bacteria buildup.

  • Hydrated Foods – Include wet or fresh foods in their diet for higher water content.
  • Pooch Pool – Set up a kiddie pool for dogs that enjoy water to help them cool down.
  • Shade Covers – Use covers and or change the position of enclosures to prevent direct sunlight.
  • Walking – Avoid taking your beloved canine friend for a walk in the heat of the day and avoid hot surfaces. Take a water bottle with you just in case.
  • Grooming – Regular grooming if recommended for breed.

Additional Tips:

  • Place shallow water dishes outside for wildlife or passing pets.
  • Keep an eye on weather patterns so you can be prepared.
  • Consider using electrolytes in extreme weather or to help with heat-affected animals.
  • Most importantly, never leave a pet in the car!

What to Do If an Animal is Experiencing Heat Stress:

  • First, watch for signs of heat stress: panting, rapid breathing, increased salivation, increased water intake, loss of appetite, trembling, stumbling, or disorientation.
  • Provide shade to cool them down. If possible, move them to breezy area or use a cool fan.
  • Offer small amounts of cool water frequently.
  • Use a damp towel for animals that dislike water. Pouring cool (not cold) water on them can also help.
  • Contact your vet and ensure your car is cool if transporting an animal.

Ensuring our pets stay hydrated and comfortable during hot weather is not just a responsibility but a crucial part of animal care. By being attentive to their needs and watching for signs of heat stress, we can prevent serious health issues. Proactive care helps animals remain healthy and comfortable, allowing them to thrive even when the temperatures are rising. Simple actions can significantly impact their well-being.
